Pink Mic Sessions

Candid performances
and the beautiful work behind them.

Approachable Musicianship
for Kids

This series celebrates the process of making music— the people, the preparation, the practice, and the performance. By showcasing new and experienced musicians, from all walks of life, we are striving to create opportunities for a child to connect with music, instruments, and people. Our goal is to inspire kids to explore making their own music.

Filmed in iconic and unexpected locations, each episode features a musician preparing, warming up, and performing. We embrace the acoustics and energy with a simple setup built for authenticity.

What’s the video like?

Each episode begins with the musician introducing themself and inviting the viewer to join them. We’ll see the arrival and assembly of the instrument and any gear. Then a candid warm up including tuning, scales, and some glimpses into the performance piece. Then the energy will shift for the performance. The priority is seeing the enjoyment of the music beyond any technical proficiency.

The video will end with the musician inviting the viewer to try it for themself.

How do we make it?

Filming usually takes about 60 to 90 minutes.

We will get cameras and audio setup and checked, and then we’ll record a few takes of the intro, a few minutes of warm up, and then a few takes of the performance.

Our goal is to be efficient and respectful of everyone’s time.

FAQs

With every question, you’ll see that we try to answer with our goal in mind: What is going to help a viewer connect with a musician and their instrument?

What should I wear?

Whatever makes you comfortable! Some musicians will prefer to perform in a tuxedo, others in a hoodie and sweatpants, and still others in a sequin jumpsuit.

What if I mess up? Are there patch sessions for the performance?

No. We’ll film a couple takes, but our goal is not perfection— nor do we have the resources to execute patch sessions for each of these episodes. Small mistakes are an endearing opportunity for a viewer to see that even the greats aren’t perfect. And being perfect is a daunting standard for a young musician looking for inspiration. This is why we include the warm up section in the video.

What piece should I perform?

Our biggest legal hurdle is getting the rights for a piece of music. So we prefer original compositions, improvisations, and selections from the public domain.
